THE BACKGROUND

  • The Association has been in existence for over 60 years.
  • Association's manufacturing members represent 65 to 70% of the volume of paints&coatings produced in South Africa.
  • The majority of companies supplying goods&services to the paint industry are Associate members of SAPMA.
  • A highly valued&effective partnership exists between the two groups, with the common objective&commitment to promote the interests of the industry.
  • The Association's overall objective is to promote the industry as a responsible supplier of quality products &services.
  • The Code of Conduct, which is mandatory for members,reflects the value system to which all members commit themselves.

The Association provides the following services to its members:

  • Quarterly statistical information relating to the value&volume of product in the main market segments as well as key productivity information;
  • A Coatings Care initiative which supports the"Responsible Care" initiative developed by the International Chemical Industry;
  • Cost of Production Indices, including a Cost Index specific to decorative paints;
  • Promotion of the industry's views&interests by presentations to or membership of statutory bodies.
  • Liaison with organisations which draft national or private specifications for paints & coatings such as the SABS.
  • Liaison with the Board of Tariffs & Trade to present the industry's view relating to tariffs & tariff classification;
  • Liaison with Government departments such as Health,Labour & Transport to assist in the drafting of regulations pertaining to safety, health, environment & the packaging,handling & transportation of hazardous goods;
  • The maintenance of a Personal Protection system for manufacturing workers to assist members in discharging their duties in terms of the Occupations Safety & Health Act;

NOTE: SAPMA is strongly supportive of the Surface Coatings Industry Employers' Association, which deals with industrial relations pertaining to the Paint & Ink Industry in terms of the requirements of the 'Labour Relations Act'.
